Core claim
Vertical and horizontal disconnection; family as civilisational root.
The framework locates humanity's condition in an original, structural fracture rather than in accumulated personal failures. The fracture originates in Eden as "the root wound of self-reliance" - a quiet act of autonomous choice that "did not announce itself with thunder" but "felt like freedom".
The fractures
Drawn from Satan's Domain:
- The root wound: self-reliance. Eve judged the fruit good for herself and ate without reference to her union with Adam or their shared dependence on God's word; Adam followed without protest. Self-reliance remains "Satan's strongest foothold, hidden in plain sight, masquerading as maturity, independence, or 'being true to myself'".
- The vertical break - between humanity and God. Fellowship turned to fear; Adam and Eve hid.
- The internal fracture - within the self. Shame and self-division: "they knew that they were naked" and scrambled to cover up.
- The horizontal break - between one another. Blame and accusation; the one-flesh union splintered into distance.
- The hidden fracture within the fracture - the covenantal rift between man and woman specifically. Eve's unilateral act broke covenant with Adam, not only with God; Satan targeted the bond between man and woman because "fracturing the horizontal covenant at the very heart of creation was the most devastating move available". The reflection names this the most consequential and least examined fracture.
These became "the inherited operating system for the entire human race" - a phrase that recurs across the reflections (see also Bringing Your Treasure Home and The Mercy of Mounting Pressure).
Family as civilisational root
"The family is not one social institution among many. It is the generative root from which every culture, every community, every civilisation grows." Damage at the covenant root travels outward into politics, economy, church, and culture; treating downstream symptoms without touching the root leaves the patterns returning.
Why the fracture stays hidden
A civilisation shaped by the fracture produces the very conditions - busyness, noise, therapeutic symptom-management - that keep attention away from the root. The rift between men and women is misread as personality, culture, or "just how things are".
The remedy
A covenantal wound requires a covenantal remedy: surrender to God first, and through that surrender to one another in mutual submission - "a return to the actual structure of reality". See The Posture of Christ.
