Human Coherence

The Posture of Christ

Humanity as incoherent rather than simply immoral - belief, desire, and action pulling in different directions - and the life of Jesus as the one sustained example of a coherent human life: trust instead of fear, surrender instead of self-reliance.

Cover of The Posture of Christ

Humanity is not simply immoral. It is incoherent. This book examines that fracture, between what we believe and how we live, and finds in the life of Jesus a rare example of coherence: a posture of trust, humility, and love that offers a way to live without contradiction.

The Posture of Christ: A New Vision of Human Life - forthcoming.

Excerpts

Preface

Humanity is not simply immoral. Humanity is incoherent. By incoherent, I mean that our beliefs, desires, fears, and actions often pull in different directions. We say one thing but do another. We aspire to goodness yet find ourselves acting against our own values.

Chapter 6

Jesus appears to have lived with a level of coherence that is rare in human history. His words aligned with his actions. His compassion remained steady even under pressure. His identity did not shift depending on who was watching. Whether he was speaking to the powerful or the powerless, his posture remained the same. He treated the wealthy and the poor with the same direct honesty. He welcomed people who had been pushed to the margins of society. He challenged systems of hypocrisy and exploitation without becoming bitter or cynical.
